  • On other news, welcome to my blog adshittification. The blog that uncovers the sinister truth about the ads being shown in your throat! This week’s highlights:

    • Youtube still hasn’t stopped ruining my week by filling up those precious few seconds between opening a video and going fullscreenwith intrusive ads that cover a quarter of your screen, and still even then you can’t stop the wall of ads that show up after the video finishes:

    • I opened up steam to play some factorio to calm my nerves, but I got greeted by an illegal ad telling me to kill myself:

    • So instead I opened library home to play something alse, only to be assaulted by more ads at the top!

    • I decided to give up trying to play. Normally I would open reddit next but I haven’t been using it since they put promotions in the post screen:

    • Thankfully lemmy is immune to such corporate bs

      No lemmy-chan not you too!

  • Who’s being exploited? It’s not like the app hides its true nature until you pay. People are upset at the idea of paying it something they don’t want to but that’s a completely imaginary scenario, those who think it’s good will pay for it and those who don’t won’t. I don’t think that justifies calling the guy names and assuming how he must’ve become (or has always been) a bad person.

I’ve no idea what you mean by legitimacy of YouTube, but if you think things like this hurt it wouldn’t it help to not have a big outrage that makes it reach even more people? Let it have a quiet death and maybe the media will stop creating these weekly how-dare-you-make-a-bad-product dramas

  • “Can’t live without” is an overstatement, but here are mine:

    • Kvaesitso, search focused android launcher. I used to really like nova launcher’s local search and navigated my phone mostly using that. But once gensture navigation became a thing I had to stop using nova and replicate the experience in Samsung launcher with various local search apps that were lacking in comparison. Tried to go back a couple times once gestures with 3rd party launchers got better but found my old setup still too ugly and sluggish to go back to. Recently I randomly came across Kvaesitso on fdroid and it was everything I ever wanted out of a launcher.

    • Amberol music player. Not the ideal music player I’d like but at least it’s not Elisa.

    • Kid3, audio file tag editor. It has much better workflow/automation than mp3tag that I used in windows, and it seems if you spend some effort on it you could add more automation to make it even better.

  • It’s a button to manage your Microsoft account that you signed into windows with. It’s not shocking that it has an option to upgrade said account

    Edit:

    1. I don’t use windows, stop assuming things about me
    2. Everything you don’t like or don’t use isn’t an ad. This is no different than Gmail and Google chrome having Google drive integration.
    3. Microsoft has been forcing people to use online accounts for windows login, so it’s only natural for the account button to let you manage it as well.
    4. This isn’t an endorsement or a value judgement.

  • I don’t know much about networking but that page seems to be about someone else setting up a dhcp server without the knowledge of the administrators or the users. In op’s case the concerns about mitm attacks don’t apply and the other concerns sound like problems that could arise in cases of misconfiguration or if the users aren’t aware they’re connected to a different network. I also couldn’t see anything about it affecting the main network’s performance

  • (video) From rapid alcoholism to runaway abortion all of this societal decay seems counterintuitive for a country that’s often believed to oppose all matter of degeneracy.

… this seems like a sane person

It’s absolutely baffling that Putin decided to invade Ukraine considering this context, unless his population was imploding at a dangerous rate and he needed more citizens.

All that video about how good Russia is at posturing at America and you’re baffled at Russia… using that to its advantage? They were obviously counting on nato being reluctant to aid Ukraine for the fear of a larger conflict and it was working until that changed couple months ago. And I don’t think I need to explain why a war would make a population problem worse…

Edit: sorry if this sounds too aggressive, I won an imaginary debate before coming across this post
