So I’ve seen lots of commentary about this ruling, but I kind of assumed that the panic was overblown. After all, the ruling said presidents were only immune for “official acts” but could still be held accountable for “unofficial acts”, right? Well fuck, turns out I was wrong.

“In dividing official from unofficial conduct, courts may not inquire into the president’s motives,” [Chief Justice] Roberts writes. “Such an inquiry would risk exposing even the most obvious instances of official conduct to judicial examination on the mere allegation of improper purpose, thereby intruding on the Article II interests that immunity seeks to protest.”

They’re literally saying that there is no way to determine what is an official act and what is not. So Biden could order someone to go shoot Trump, and we couldn’t even inquire into if he was acting in an official capacity or not.

I was so mad Biden whiffed his response on this. I wanted him to come out and be like “women are literally fleeing states that have abortion bans. Infant mortality rates in Texas are skyrocketing.”

Second, this article is summarizing another article that it links to at the beginning. The original article was written in 2017. If they’re going to plagarize paraphrase another article, could they at least choose something more recent?

Unfortunately, I think this is the most likely scenario. Going from our modern technology levels, which are more than capable of destroying the world, to Dyson spheres is a huge leap that will take who knows how long (decades? centuries? millennia?).

Before that happens, we have to live together on a planet without blowing ourselves up or making the planet uninhabitable. As technology continues to advance, walking that knife edge of survival seems more and more difficult. The pessimist inside of me says that no civilization has been able to accomplish it.

Yeah, it seems very possible that at one point, civilization will turn inward instead of outward. Why go through the time and effort to colonize the stars when you can just create a cyber-utopia? If you’re advanced enough, you could make it feel like an eternity while almost no time passes on the outside.

Sure, your planet might get destroyed by a cataclysmic event in the far future, but if you can make that feel like billions or trillions of years, who really cares?
